Experimenting with Tee Yarn Necklaces
Last week I attended a Laneway Learning class eager to learn how to make myself a few necklaces from Tee Yarn. The class was run by Maria Jesus de Santisteban and Maria Yebra from Hook and Hop. What is tee yarn? This was the first time I had learnt about this great new product and now I want to do so much more with it. Tee yarn is essentially an off-cut that comes from the t-shirt manufacturing process. Since it's made from t-shirt fabric, it has the added benefit of being versatile enough to wear in any season and also comes in an amazing array of colours.
Like all new craft projects, I had to give the techniques a few goes to perfect them. I picked up the finger knitting technique for the first necklace very quickly and before I knew it, I had completed this bright pink statement necklace. I think this necklace might also be my favourite, but maybe that's just because I love coral pink! I also added some wooden beads to give it a nice finished look.
The next necklace was slightly more difficult for me, but I eventually got the hang of it after a few more tries at home. This necklace involved creating loops and passing one loop through the next while alternating colours. It produced a chain effect that was simple and less dominating in appearance than the finger knitting.
We also learnt a few more techniques that I'm still working on, including the celtic heart knot and 4-strand weaving. I'm looking forward to many more tee yarn adventures and trying out a different project with this fantastic material.
