Indigo Dress by Tilly and the Buttons
My autumn edition of the Tilly and the Buttons Indigo Smock Dress is here! This dress started with the gorgeous daisy print fabric, which I originally saw Ceri use to make the Tilly and the Buttons Safiya Dungarees. It was love at first sight and I immediately purchased my Giant Daisy Linen-look Cotton from Crafty Sew and So. The fabric is now reduced so it’s the perfect time to buy. Despite this light fabric seeming like more of a spring/summer choice, it’s great for layering and the black and white are ideal for wearing with tights and boots. I’m hoping this comfortable, loose-fitting dress will get me through English multiple seasons and become a wardrobe staple.
Being my second time making the Indigo Dress, I more or less knew what to expect but I also managed to skip a few steps the first time around. When I made my sheer version of the Indigo Dress, I excluded the bust darts, neckline facing, pockets and hems - it was a very quick make! I made the same flounce sleeve dress version as my first Indigo but also added the frill seams this time. They were quite easy to make, it just means having to create an extra hem for each frill seam.
The steps were all quite straight forward but simple steps don’t seem to stop me from making avoidable mistakes. After inserting the pockets and completing the side seams, I realised I had sewn the pocket lining face down, meaning the reverse of the fabric was visible inside the pockets. Unpicking has to be one of the most frustrating things about sewing - especially when it takes three hours! I persevered anyway and am so happy with the final result. This daisies on the dress are giving me serious Mary Quant sixties vibes - now I’m just hoping for some good excuses to get out during Autumn in my new dress.
